Richard Bernstein, a fixture of New York’s fashion and art set, as well as the Studio 54 crowd, captured the allure of the disco era through his iconic hyper-colored graphic portraits of superstars for the covers of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine.

Bernstein’s bold and graphic artwork was so complementary to Warhol’s that it was often thought that Warhol created the covers himself.

Yet it was Bernstein, an American artist and art director, whose distinctive craft of embellishing photographs with pastels, stencils, and airbrushing, monumentalized his subjects into dazzling larger-than-life pop-art incarnations of themselves—iconic and forever young.

Contact sheet of Richard by Francesco Scavullo, 1977

“Sometimes people think I do the cover of Interview. Well, I don’t. I haven’t the time. But Richard’s faces are wonderful. They’re so colorful & he makes everyone look so famous.” Andy Warhol
